The elements of design are the building blocks of design which make up every web page you build. You can create more powerful website by understanding the basic elements of design.
Basically, there are 5 elements of design:
1. Lines and Linework
Lines include rules and borders, which can be vertical or horizontal. Lines help delineate the spaces around elements on web pages. Linework increases the readability of the web design.
2. Shape
Shapes make up any enclosed contour in the web design. Shapes on most Web pages are square or rectangular but you can use images to generate other shapes within your web designs.
3. Color
Most Web designers are acutely aware of color is one of the web design element. But remember that a good plan in design is to create it without color first. So color is in fact not a required element of any design, however add a little color can enhance the web design.
4. Texture
Texture gives a web design a feeling of surface. Texture on web pages is all visual, but you can use natural textures or artificial to get the effect in your web designs.
5. Direction
Direction gives your web designs motion. In most web designs there is a sense of movement in a direction across the web design. Good web designs lead the eye through the design in a deliberate fashion so that the viewer sees what the web designer wants.
